Cynthia M. Dobyns, President of Abovewater is a journalist with a foundation
in business news and feature writing, as well as special event promotions, Ms. Dobyns has been
employed in the communications field for more than 20 years. She began her career as a part-
time newspaper reporter at The St. Petersburg Times and then edited Florida Construction
Quarterly and South Florida Living magazines.
She opened Abovewater PR and Marketing in 2001, after successfully managing a public relations
firm in Alexandria that launched the Marriott Conference Centers brand of lodging to address
the needs of the meetings industry. She served as Corporate PR Director for Sentry III, Ltd.
a hospitality management firm based in New York City. Specializing in the travel industry,
she has represented several luxury resorts, conference centers, and destinations, such as:
Fiddler's Creek, The Registry Resort, Edgewater Beach Hotel, and Naples Grande Golf Club,
Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Bonaventure Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale; Saddlebrook Golf
& Tennis Resort in Tampa; Marco Beach Ocean Resort, Marco Island Marriott and Eagle's Nest
on Marco Island; Crystal Palace Resort & Casino in Nassau; Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables,
Florida; Hickory Ridge Conference Center in Lisle, IL; Westfields International Conference
Center and Wye River Conference Center outside Washington, D.C. and opened MeadowView Marriott
Conference Resort and Convention Center in Tennessee and Kingsgate Marriott Conference Hotel
at the University of Cincinnati. A vice president at Maizner & Franklin Public Relations in
Ft. Lauderdale, Ms. Dobyns worked on special events for the island of Jamaica; and as a
Florida affiliate of Edelman, Inc. Public Relations, promoted Mexico as a travel destination,
through the Miami-based Mexican Government Tourist Office.
Ms. Dobyns published the Cultural Quarterly for Broward County's Cultural Alliance and worked
with the United Arts Council of Collier County. She has organized art appraisal events on
behalf of Gulfshore Life Magazine in Southwest Florida. She has organized the annual publicity
surrounding two international film festivals and the Naples National Art Festival on behalf
of the von Liebig Art Center in downtown Naples.
She served as a board member for the New Jersey Travel Industry Association and hosted two
Governor's Conferences on Tourism in NJ and FL. She is President of the Public Relations
Association of Collier County (PRACC), and a member of the Public Relations Society of
America and the United Arts Council.
